High Ham Preschool

Our preschool is nestled in the village of High Ham, near Langport, which is in the heart of the Somerset Levels. We are a registered charity and are managed by a parents’ committee as well as our excellent Preschool Manager, Bekki. Initially set up as a playgroup in 1992, we are now a thriving Preschool, in a single storey wooden building with an excellent and well designed outdoor area. Our staff team is very experienced and committed to supporting the children and their families. It is important to us that your child is happy and secure and makes good progress in their time at High Ham Preschool. We have good links with the local community, including the local school, which is on the same site.

We are proud to offer a Good setting with Outstanding Teaching and Learning; “All children make extremely good progress, relative to their starting points. Teaching is consistently excellent. Staff use every opportunity to challenge children very skilfully. ” (Ofsted 2018).

We are based on the grounds of High Ham Primary School, and our pre-school children come from High Ham and local villages and towns. Most of our children will continue on to attend High Ham Primary School.

We also provide a daily Breakfast Club, which is available from 7:30am, and an after school club, called Monkey Madness, which cares for children until 5pm. Both Breakfast Club and Monkey Madness can take children from 2 to 11 years old.

Our Aims

At High Ham Preschool we intend to achieve independence, choice, collaboration and personal discovery in all areas of learning. We want our children to see the awe and wonder in the world around them. Our intention is to shape the children in our preschool into confident and caring members of our community who enjoy being adventurous and investigative in their daily lives.

We implement this using the Early Years curriculum as a starting point alongside our knowledge of the children and the valuable input from parents. We embellish and deepen learning through fun, engaging, stimulating and cultural activities, experiences and adventures. At the heart of our planning is the intention to expose our learners to many quality experiences, which provide them with a large element of choice and the need for independent thinking.

To ensure this has a positive impact on our children, we tailor the children’s education through individual and group planning, assessment and reflections from each child’s Key Worker. We evaluate the learners’ progress in all areas of the Early Years curriculum to assess the difference our implementation is having on the children. The staff’s caring, positive attitude and enthusiasm positively impact on the children’s development.

We look forward to sharing our activities, experiences and adventures with your child and their family.
